Lesson 3
Goal: To share insight as to what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ.
A. Jesus calls His first disciples.
B. He tells them to come and follow Him.
C. He gives them purpose: “I will make you fishers of men”.
D. They follow immediately.
A. A disciple denies himself and picks up his cross daily.
a. A cross is a Roman instrument of death.
b. A disciple crucifies his sinful ways and lives to please God.
B. Being a disciple is more valuable than gaining all the riches of the world.
A. The Greek word for “hate” is “miseö”, which means to “love less”.
B. Read Matthew 10:37. This verse interprets Luke 14:26.
a. Matthew uses the term: “loves…more”.
b. Luke uses the term: “does not hate” or “does not ‘love less’”.
C. A disciple must love Jesus more than his closest relationships.
D. A disciple must be willing to take up his cross (crucify sin) and follow Jesus.
E. A disciple gives up everything that stands in the way of Christ.
A. Disciples are taught to pray.
A. People recognize Jesus’ disciples by their love for one another.
B. Disciples get the opportunity to show their love for each other when they gather together as a church.
A. Jesus commands His disciples to make disciples of all nations.
B. He commands His disciples to teach younger disciples to obey God’s commands.
