INSIGHT

In Romans 1:1 we read, "Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus...set apart for the gospel of God." The Greek word for servant here is doulos, which means a slave or a bondservant. Paul understood his role as a disciple of Christ. He gloried in this title of bondservant of Jesus Christ. He knew he belonged to Christ, and just as Roman slaves had no rights, Paul saw himself as a man without rights; a man who was completely under subjection to the Lord, set apart for the Gospel of God. Paul was becoming like his Lord and teacher, Jesus Christ. (Luke 6:40).

Jesus himself took up the title of "servant". Isaiah 52:13 through 53:12 shows Christ as a suffering servant. We read in the New Testament Jesus fulfilling his role as God's servant. He loved at all times, he walked in wisdom, he lived his life to please his Father, he sought every opportunity to do good, and was obedient even to the point of death, thus fulfilling his Father's mission of redemption.

Jesus left this example of servitude for us to follow (John 13:13-17); that we too may live our lives as servants of God. It is interesting to note that after Isaiah 53, the word "servant" is never used in its singular. From this point on, Isaiah speaks of the blessings that the Servant's followers will receive, calling them "the servants of the Lord" (Isaiah 54:17); "his servants" (66:14); and "my servants" (65:8,9). Have you seen yourself as a bondservant of Jesus? Have you given up all your rights and placed yourself under the full control of Christ? Just as Christ came to serve, we too ought to serve rather than to be served. Seek to please God in every matter; seek every opportunity to serve. These are the kind of people Christ died for--people who are eager to do what is good! (Titus 2:14)

Becoming Like Christ
Service with a Smile

Key Text:               Galatians 5:13

You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love.

Theme:

When Jesus came to earth, He came as a servant. He was a servant who would suffer and die for our redemption, as Isaiah clearly predicted (Isaiah 52:13-53:12; Mark 10:45). Even after His resurrection and ascension to heaven, Jesus still serves those who are His. Hebrews 7:25 says that Christ lives to intercede for us. We need to follow our Master’s example, no matter how lacking in glamour it may seem. Just Jesus has taught us, the road to greatness is the road to servitude (Mt 23:11-12).

Application:

Here are some practical suggestions:

1. Help out in the services: help with the

    chairs, songbooks, clean up, nursery,

    etc.

2. Whenever you see a brother or a sister

in need, offer to help. Contribute to

     others’ needs (Rom.12:13).

3.  Have the same focus as Christ. He

came to serve, not to be served (Mk

   10:45).

4. Seek every opportunity to do good.

Always ask yourself, “What can I do to

    please the Lord?”

5. When you serve, do it with a willing

     spirit and a smile.

May the Lord richly bless you!

  2. Serve to edify the church
             (Rom 14:19)
Small Group Study

Getting To It:

Pray for one another that we may truly be servants of the Lord and that each of us may place ourselves last and seek to serve rather than to be served.

This week's Quiet Times:

Service with a Smile

MONDAY
The message of the Gospel is a message of LOVE. The way God expresses His love is by serving. Jesus did not come to be served but rather to serve us; and serve us He did by taking God’s wrath in our place! Read carefully Matthew 20:25-28. How will you become the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven? What did Jesus come into the world to do? Write Mark 10:45 on an index card and memorize it. Get together with a brother/sister and pray for a servant’s attitude in all you do.

TUESDAY
In order to be effective servants, we need to have an attitude that is pleasing to God.  Living to please the Lord is the first step in learning to serve Him, and therefore, serve each other. Read Col.3:23-24 and Eph. 6:7-8. When you do anything, who is it that you should be doing it for? How should you serve or work? Write Col. 3:23-24 on an index card and memorize it. When you wake up each day, pray that you may please the Lord in all that you do. Renew your mind with the Word and become a servant. Call a brother/sister who needs you to serve them and see how you can fill their needs.

WEDNESDAY
In order to be effective servants for God, certain attitudes need to be present in us. Humility and selflessness need to pervade our minds and thoughts. Read Phil. 2:3-8. Whom should you consider as better than yourself? Whose interests should you protect? Whose attitude should you have? What is that attitude? Write Phil. 2:14-15 on an index card and memorize it. Believe that you can make a difference in this crooked and perverse generation. Get together with a brother/sister and pray to make a difference at your workplace to the glory of God. Do something for someone at your workplace / school who doesn’t get along with you. Show them love by what you do and believe that the Lord is using you.

THURSDAY
As you serve the Lord through serving others an attitude to watch out for is that of thinking you deserve a reward for what you are doing. Remember that the Lord is watching over you and it is God that rewards whatever you do in secret. Read Luke 17:7-10. As Christ’s servant, when you have done everything you were told to do, what should be your attitude? Write Galatians 1:10 on an index card and memorize it. Convince yourself of these words and realize that whatever you do will be seen by the Lord. Glorify Him! Make yourself available to serve on a committee in one of the ministries in the church. Tell a brother/sister who usually heads a committee that you want to serve the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind and strength.

FRIDAY
As you realized from Wednesday’s quiet time, humility precedes service. Because our Lord is humble (look up this word in a good dictionary) He has no problems with serving us. To serve someone is a privilege, not a chore. Worldly greatness is associated with being served.  Godly greatness is associated with serving others at your expense. Read John 13:12-17. What was Jesus trying to teach His disciples by washing their feet? How have you “washed” other people’s feet? What attitudes have prevented you from freely giving yourself to serve your spouse, co-worker, family member, friend, brother/sister, children?

Learn to serve without being asked...as working for the Lord and not for men...
