INSIGHT

The term resurrection deals with the teaching, event and act of persons being brought from death to unending life at the close of the age. Jesus' preaching included the doctrine of the resurrection. Opposition by the Sadducees, who denied the resurrection, gave Jesus the opportunity to assert His own thought on the matter (Mark 12:18-27). John's Gospel presents Jesus as the mediator of the resurrection who gives to believers the life given Him by His Father (John 6:53-58).

It is every true Christian's hope to see Jesus and to dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. The power of Christ, His sovereign power, is summed up in this phrase: "I am the resurrection and the life!" (John 11:25-26). It is an unspeakable comfort to all true disciples that Jesus Christ is the resurrection and the life, and will be so to them! Resurrection is a return to life; Christ is the author of that return and gives the life that effects that return. This promise of eternal life in Christ is given to everyone who believes in Him. Mark 16:15-16, John 8:31-32, Acts 2:26-42, Romans 10:9-17 and Revelation 2:10b gives further insight on what it means to believe in Christ. The Lord Jesus did speak of a resurrection of the wicked and the righteous. He says in John 5:28-29 that all who are in the grave will hear His voice. To what shall they be raised? Some to life and some to misery. Those who have died in Christ will be resurrected to live forever. They will be admitted into the presence of God with their new bodies--that is life! But those who lived outside of Christ shall be resurrected to eternal damnation--shut out from the presence of God, that is death! The Bible unquestionably affirms the doctrine of resurrection of all persons from the dead. We all have a corporate destiny to encounter just and divine response to faithfulness and unfaithfulness (Acts 24:15). Are you in Christ? Have you been born again? (John 3:3-5)

The Attitude in Christ
Readiness

Key Text:                  Titus 2:11-13

" For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope--the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior”

Theme:

Heaven and the happiness of it is emphatically called the blessed hope because it is the great thing we look for; and a blessed hope because it is the great thing we look for; and a blessed hope because, when we attain it, we shall be completely happy for ever. As Christians, it is our duty and desire to look forward to the coming of Christ. Are you ready to meet Jesus? Are you looking for that blessed hope? Our response to this questions will determine our readiness!

Application:

Here are some practical suggestions:

1. Read scripture pertaining to Christ’s

    return and Heaven.

2. Get involved in the kingdom of Christ.

Be determined to be found working for

    Jesus and living for God!

3. Encourage members of the church with

the hope and joy of heaven and the

return of Christ (1 Thess. 4:16-18).

4. Share the blessed hope of eternal life

and the return of Christ with those who

        do not know Jesus.

May the Lord richly bless you!

Small Group Study

Warm-up:

Have you ever been caught unprepared for a situation that you knew was going to happen well in advance?

See To It                              Matthew 25:1-13

This parable employs the pageantry of an Oriental wedding. Several observations will aid in the understanding of the parable. Eastern weddings were set for a given day, but Orientals have never been as bound by precision of starting or ending times as are those in western culture. The bridal party was to be ready. Sometime after sundown, members of the groom's party, bearing lamps on poles, would depart from the home of the groom and proceed through the streets in a gala procession. They would join with the bridal party, and the two would wind back through the village to the place designated for the ceremony and the wedding feast. The ten virgins of the parable are part of the bridal party.

1. What was the difference between the foolish and the prudent virgins?

2. Did this difference have to do with their attitude towards being prepared (ready)?

3. Why did the bridegroom miss the foolish virgins?

4. Did these virgins still want to be part of the wedding feast?

5. Why weren’t they allowed to come in?

Seeing It Closer:

1. Are you holding a lamp only to run out of oil because of your attitude?

2. Notice that all the virgins fall asleep at one point. When they wake up is when they meet the challenge of preparedness. What does this mean?

Getting To It:

Are you a Christian in heart, soul, mind and strength? Share how your beliefs and convictions are shaping your attitude of preparedness.

This week's Quiet Times:

The Hope of Eternal Life

MONDAY

All the topics we’ve been studying lately do not make any sense and have no value unless we consider the reason behind the motivation for studying them. The reason is the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus was sent to die for our sins and to give us a hope beyond this life by His resurrection. If He had only died on the cross and then buried, He would not have been any different from any other martyr. What declared Him Lord and Savior of all men was the fact that He arose on the third day (Romans 1:4). Read carefully John 3:13-16. What is Jesus trying to establish in verse 13? The account Jesus is referring to in verse 14 is found in Numbers 21:4-9. What parallels can you draw between the account in the desert with Moses and the crucifixion of Jesus? What was the purpose in lifting up the snake and the Son of Man? Why was this done (vs. 16)? Notice that eternal life is the key word in these passages! What’s the other side of the coin? Write John 3:36 on an index card and memorize it. Share this great hope with your co-workers this week.

TUESDAY

To have eternal life means more than to live forever. The stress is more on the quality than on the quantity, though both are affirmed. Furthermore, John reveals it to be not only future possession but also a present reality. This is the life Jesus offers to the world. Read John 5:24. What are two qualifiers for eternal life? What does it mean to believe Jesus’ word and to believe the One who set Him? Does Jesus say that you will have eternal life as in the future, if you believe, or does He say that you  have it now, as soon as you accept these things (obeying the gospel)? There’s obviously some commitment involved in the qualifiers of eternal life. Read John 6:61-69. Notice the exclusivity in vs. 65. Many had and still have a hard time with that. Why? What kind of attitude did the apostles have in light of the rejection of other people? Doesn’t vs. 69 contain the qualifiers of eternal life we read in the previous passage? Write John 12:25 on an index card and memorize it. Have you let go of your worldly life?

WEDNESDAY

Appreciating what God has given you involves understanding and knowing His will. Read 1 John 5:20. Reflect on this passage for a while and pray after you’ve read it once and then read it again carefully.  Rely on the Spirit God has given you to teach you about this conviction the Apostle John has. What did Jesus come to give you? Why has He give you this? Toward whom does this understanding lead you? What, or should I say Who is God and eternal life? Does the understanding of this passage lead you to believe that your walk in Christ is an exercise in self-control with a reward at the end, or a blissful commitment to an eternal relationship with your Lord and Savior, your Bridegroom? Your conviction on this one can be shown by how much of your present life you entrust to God. Read Mark 10:23-30. How much have you entrusted to your Lord? Write John 17:3 on an index card and memorize it.

THURSDAY

You want absolute, exact proof that you will rise again? Do you want to be sure that you will partake in the resurrection of the righteous? Read Romans 6:3-12. What happened when you were baptized, if indeed you have been baptized (vs. 3 and 4)? So why should you, or anyone, be baptized? So baptism is a means to an end, right? To what end (vs. 6, 7, and 8)? Look at verse 7. Count yourself dead to sin but alive to God! This is eternal life folks! You have received it! You have been raised from the watery grave to LIFE! So if you have united yourself with Him like this (being baptized [Acts 2:38]) in His death (baptism is a simulation of death), you will CERTAINLY be what??? Praise the Lord!!! Write 1 Peter 3:21 on an index card and memorize it. What is it that makes this baptism effective?  Share this great news!

FRIDAY

This has been an exciting week, hasn’t it? On and on the Lord continues to assure us and encourage us with the plans He has prepared for us. I’m going to ask you to dwell on a long passage: 1 Corinthians 15:35-58. Notice the parallels between Adam and Jesus, which are a reflection between our former selves, born like Adam and fallen, and our new selves, raised to life in Christ by the Spirit. What’s going to happen to you if Jesus comes back before you die? Verse 57 is the attitude of thankfulness in all things and verse 58 is the motivation to continue in our earthly struggle, because, we have some incredible things to look forward to in our relationship with God! Write 1 Peter 2:9 on an index card and memorize it.
