PERFECTING THE SAINTS

FOR THE WORK OF MINISTRY

It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

Ephesians 4:11-13

The goal of this seminar is to increase the participation of the members by identifying and using their God given gifts for the building up (edification) of the body of Christ.

-         We are not to be spectators, but active participants in the work.

-         God does not give us gifts to be idle, but to commit us to the work at hand. He expects us to work!

-         He looks for EXCELLENCE!

"Eagerly desire the greater gifts…"  1 Co 12: 12-14, 27-31

THE GIFT OF SERVICE

We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; (Romans 12:6-7)

COMMENTS

Perhaps this is the most basic and common gift. Not everyone can teach or preach, but everyone can serve. According to Jesus: “…whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all.” (Mark 10:43-44)

EXAMPLES OF THOSE WHO HAD THE GIFT OF SERVICE

  1. Jesus – Mark 10:43; John 13:1-7
  2. Dorcas (Tabitha) – Acts 9:36-39

IMPORTANT SCRIPTURES THAT SPEAK OF THE GIFT OF SERVICE

  1. Galatians 5:13 - Serve one another in love.
  2. 1 Peter 4:11 - If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides.

THE GIFT OF TEACHING

We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; (Romans 12:6-7)

We all need to teach the Gospel, and serve, but not everyone has the gift of teaching.

COMMENTS

In each generation, the church needs teachers of the word of God. Faithful teachers are well grounded in the word and have the ability to effectively communicate the word of God.  Culture and customs are accessories to the message of the Gospel. A good teacher can relate to the audience through the use of familiar accessories, as Jesus did with the parables.

BIBLICAL EXAMPLES OF THE GIFT OF TEACHING

  1. Ephesians 4:11-12  It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service…
  2. Titus 2:1You must teach what is in accord with sound doctrine.
  3. 1 Peter 3:14-16 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. "Do not fear what they fear; do not be frightened." But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. (Good teachers recognize that you cannot answer according to your likes, but in order for others to understand.)
  4. 2 Pedro 3:15-18 Bear in mind that our Lord's patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction. Therefore, dear friends, since you already know this, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of lawless men and fall from your secure position. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen. (We need to be careful not to distance the truth for others)

COMMENTS

We know the church is not a business, but there are expenditures and material needs for us as a church and for certain individuals who qualify for benevolence.  Not to mention we need to spread the Gospel through all means, so we need budgets and aid for those in need and salaries for those who devote their lives to the building up of the body.  Each generation in the church is in need of individuals who have the gift of offering.
