Adultery

A teaching that occurs several times in Proverbs is the warning against committing adultery. Many tools of deception come into play when it comes to adultery. Proverbs 6:24-25 discusses a few of these tools most notably the smooth tongue of the wayward wife. This passage makes note of how flattery is used to entice one into the web of adultery. Flattery is the art of artificially inflating the ego of someone whom appreciates indulging in their own vanity. In verse 25 it warns of lusting in your heart after the beauty of the adulteress. Lust is a critical component in leading one to commit adultery. James 1:13-15 tells us how our own evil desires give birth to sin in us. Lust is letting yourself be dragged away and enticed until the desire conceives itself into the sinful act. Lust is the self-centered desire to fulfill the self-gratification of sinful sexual appetites.

Proverbs cautions us not to fall victim to the seduction of adultery. Adultery is the breaking of trust and fidelity in a marriage. It can destroy families and leave scars in life that are forever mourned and regretted. It is the one thing that the Bible teaches can justifiably end a marriage in divorce. In Matthew 19:9 Jesus teaches, “I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery. In 1 Corinthians 6:18-20 Paul tells us how serious we should view sexual immorality in our lives.

Some of the most graphic illustrations of judgement and destruction used in Proverbs are used in regards to committing adultery. Proverbs 6:26 says that the prostitute reduces you to a loaf of bread, and the adulteress preys upon your very life. Proverbs 7:26-27 tells us that many are the victims that are brought down by adultery and that her house is a highway to the grave, leading down to the chambers of death. Proverbs 5:5 says “Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to the grave“. A very bleak picture is drawn for those who don’t have the wisdom to avoid adultery. The reward for adultery is ultimately the destruction of those who partake in it.

Proverbs also encourages us to remember our loyalty to our spouses and the love that drew you together to begin with. Proverbs 5:15-21 discusses the special bond of intimacy shared by marital partners. Our spouse’s love and affections should always captivate us. Verse 20 asks an important question “Why be captivated by an adulteress?“. “For a man’s ways are in full view of the Lord and he examines all his paths” (Proverbs 5:21). Proverbs 6:27-29 makes the point that you cannot get away from being punished for doing obviously dangerous physical things like scooping fire in your lap or walking barefoot on burning coals. Likewise, you will not go unpunished for committing adultery.
