Humility

HUMILITY

There are only two reasons why we do anything in this life. Either we do it to glorify ourselves or we do it to glorify God. The first stems from pride while the second from humility. We may spend our lives battling with our pride so that we can give glory to our heavenly Father. One thing is certain, that if we do not overcome our pride and learn to humble ourselves before God then we will not enter the kingdom of heaven. This is why the Lord admonishes us to:

“Seek the Lord, all you humble of the land, you who do what he commands. Seek righteousness, seek humility; perhaps you will be sheltered on the day of the Lord’s anger.” ( Zep 2:3)

Humility is yet another quality that the Lord commands us to seek; like righteousness; like wisdom. We need to engage in an active pursuit to understand humility and to live according to it.

Consider that the Lord chose Moses to lead his people because he was the “most humble man on the earth.” Consider Jesus who calls us to him because he is gentle and humble of heart (Matt 11:28-30). Consider the following passages as well:

(James 3:13 NIV) Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.

(Prov 11:2 NIV) When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.

(1 Pet 5:5 NIV) Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Wisdom and humility go hand in hand. If you are wise you will be humble. In fact Proverbs 22:4 says that humility and the fear of the Lord bring life. This makes perfect sense because God opposes the proud and we know that no one can stand in opposition to the Lord and ultimately live. This is why Jesus taught us that no one could enter the kingdom of heaven unless he becomes like a little child, because children are humble!

Children recognize that they need to learn. They recognize that they don’t know everything and that they are not totally self-sufficient. They know they need help and in a secure environment are not ashamed to ask for it. These qualities are the opposite of pride; they are humility. Jesus displayed these qualities best when he became a servant and allowed himself to be crucified on the cross for our sins. Now it’s our turn to follow in his footsteps and learn humility!

(Phil 2:5-7 NIV) Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: {6} Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, {7} but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.

TUESDAY: Read Colossians 2-3. In chapter 2 verses 18 and 23 Paul speaks about “false humility” which is not really based on a love for God but rather a love for man made rules and regulations. According to chapter 3 verse 12 what should we clothe ourselves with? According to v. 13 why should we bear with each other? And what binds all of these good things together in v. 14?

WEDNESDAY: Read Ephesians 4:1-6. In v. 1 we are commanded to live lives worthy of our calling. How does v. 2 say to do this? Why do you think we are admonished to be “completely humble”? Do you find it more difficult to humble yourself towards some people? If yes, why do you think that is? Read the rest of the chapter and pray for the Lord to help you to grow in true humility!

FRIDAY: Read Proverbs 11:2. What is the reward or benefit of humility? Look up the word honor in the concordance of your bible and find passages that help you to understand what honor is. How is the Lord going to honor you who display true humility towards Him and towards His children?

*Family Devotional Ideas: Read about King Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 3 and 4. Talk with your children about why the kind of pride the king had was offensive to God. Ask your children to tell you some of the things God provides for your family and then give thanks to God together in prayer!

  1. Read Proverbs 1:1-7 together and go over the list of benefits with your family.

  2. Make a poster with the word wisdom at the center. Decorate the poster by writing some of the benefits of wisdom all around the word. Discuss the benefits of listening to God and pray for wisdom together.

During these stressful times, we want to offer our prayers and encouragement to any who are interested. Our leaders are available to help, please let us know by emailing info@nulllicoc.org.
