Lying

Probably one of the most painful things we experience in life is when we have been lied to and deceived by someone. Likewise, one of the most harmful things we can do to someone is lie to them. This, more importantly, hurts the Lord and is opposite of His nature. Lies are a breaking of trust and a misleading deception of what the truth really is. A lying tongue is one of the things that Proverbs 6:17 says that the Lord hates. The Lord cannot stand falsehood or deception of any kind. Lying is a means of deliberately misrepresenting the truth, or is used as a way of protecting oneself from the consequences of something that they have done wrong. Lies become the masks that we try to hide behind when we really don’t want people to know who we really are.

Unfortunately, we live in a society that believes that telling lies is an acceptable thing to do if we think it is necessary to protect someone or ourselves. Lies and deception spread like gangrene when they become acceptable behaviors. Proverbs 29:12 says that if a ruler listens to lies all his officials become wicked. Lies hurt the moral fiber of any nation where its leaders give in to dishonesty and deception. The old saying is so true, “Lies beget more lies”. Lies always need more lies to keep the real truth from being brought to light.

Jesus taught that lies were Satan’s native language and that Satan was a liar and the father of lies (John 8:44). When we lie we are doing Satan’s bidding for him and we become enemies of the truth. One of the most important things we can posses is an honest assessment of ourselves. 1 John 1:5-10 teaches the importance of being honest in acknowledging our sin and faults. If we can’t acknowledge our sinfulness and claim that we are without sin we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. In fact in this passage it says that if we claim that we have not sinned we make Jesus out to be a liar and His word has no place in our lives.

Excuses many times are sugarcoated lies that are used to avoid giving the real reason why we won’t do something. In Luke 14:15-24 those who were invited to the Great Banquet excused themselves right out of the kingdom. They did not want to honor the master by attending His feast, because they wanted to do what they thought was more important. Excuses used instead of telling the real reason are lies.

We must come to love and value truth in our daily lives. Proverbs 23:23 tells us “To buy the truth and do not sell it; get wisdom, discipline and understanding“. The truth is one of life’s most important investments that we can make. God warns us in Romans 1:18-32 that His wrath is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness. One of our daily prayers should be the request made in Proverbs 30:7-8 where the Proverbs writer asks God to keep falsehood and lies far from him.
